Areas of Practice
Depression, Anxiety & Addiction
Depression, anxiety and addiction have been called the epidemics of the modern era. Their reach is vast and their effects are devastating.
You don't need to suffer in silence, alone, isolated, anguished and angry.
You may feel completely trapped and without hope, but things can get better with a bit of help!
Marriage & Family Counselling
Our families can be our greatest supports and a source of deep joy. When things go wrong, family is also where we are most vulnerable.
Are you growing apart in your relationship? Stuck in patterns that seem to end in stale and bitter arguments? Struggling to understand your kids and at a loss for how to help them?
--But can you help with other issues?
Our areas of clinical experience include:
Child and Adolescent Counselling
Aboriginal Issues (We are contracted with First Nations Health Authority)
Crime Victims (We are covered under Crime Victims Assistance Program)
Trauma & Vicarious Trauma
Workplace Issues & Burnout
Grief, Death, and Dying
Please get in touch and tell us a bit about what you are looking for. If we're a good fit, we'd be happy to see what we can do for you!
Originally from Edmonton, I've had the opportunity to live in a lot of places and am proud to now call Nanaimo home. And I'm LOVING island life! I'm married, with two beautiful baby girls. I'm an outdoorsy guy and also a computer nerd. I love music and am an accomplished cellist.
I've always been fascinated by.... US! -We humans are pretty interesting! We are capable of so much creativity and generosity and beauty and kindness and love. And we also seem constantly to get tripped up by things that stand in the way of moving forward. This has always made me curious and eager to study and learn about how we tick and how I can help others (and myself) to tick better! I love what I do and am passionate about sharing in my clients' journeys of growth!
My journey to become a therapist began far before I even realized it was happening. I’ve always been sensitive to others emotions, soft spoken, and tend to prefer listening rather than speaking. For a long time, I believed these were weaknesses. However, I have come to embrace those traits as strengths in assisting me to facilitate space for others to also discover and embrace who they are.
It takes a lot of courage to come to therapy and my desire is to honour that courage in each of my clients. I believe that we all have personal strengths and resiliency that can help us achieve change in our lives. At times we can become stuck and lose track of those resources. I believe the counselling relationship can be a safe and non-judgemental space for clients to rediscover those resources. Beyond your specific goals you bring to therapy, my hope is that you will also discover greater congruence, self-esteem, and the capacity to make healthier choices.
I have a BA in Counselling, a MA degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I draw from many different client-centered modalities to help you reach your goals in therapy, including: emotion focused therapy, Satir transformational systemic therapy, accelerated resolution therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, play therapy, psychoeducation, mindfulness, solution focused therapy, and narrative therapy.
"Ron came highly recommended to me. He has helped me immensely as I grieve for my husband who died rather quickly after receiving a cancer diagnosis. It’s amazing what layers can be uncovered and recognized when you speak with someone so knowledgeable and in tune. He’s gentle, yet very real which I appreciate. I would recommend him to anyone." -LT
"Ron Depner counselling is the best of the best. I highly recommend Ron to anyone looking to better themselves, work through really hard stuff, or just needing someone to listen. I’ve done counselling in the past and did not find it helpful or enjoyable. I always looked forward to my sessions with Ron and actually found them to be so helpful! Ron listened and even offered advice when necessary." -NZ
"I was referred to Ron’s services by a couple who are friends of mine. I was hesitant to the idea of counselling at first, but was at my wits end and required some help that was beyond just friends and family.
Ron essentially coached me through the most challenging and difficult experience of my adult life and I am thrilled with his level of service and the overall experience.
Highly recommend!!!!" -MC
"In my experience of seeing therapists, i have done talk therapy, CBT and art therapy, however never have I met a therapist like Ron. He was very knowledgeable, kind and easy to talk to. He (along with some EMDR) helped me see my past experiences in a new light, and that has had a ripple effect into other aspects of my past and current life. I would 100% recommend his services to anyone." -EE
